Burning fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and gas releases greenhouse gases into our atmosphere. In addition, the combustion of these fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) pollutants that trap heat in the atmosphere instead of allowing it to escape back into space where it was formed.
